Rules of the Game
Select a high-wages food and ensure that your pet is prepared and starving to eat.
Decide on the “Command” word. Ensure that it stays consistent, something like “Sit (or Remain or Wait)” works nicely.
Decide on the “No Benefit” marker word, something like “Nope (or Too Bad or Opps)” functions well.
View your own dog’s language. The way a dog says “please” would be to go into the “sit” position.
Be patient. You dog will sit to say “please” (eventually).
When a dog desires a toy dog, food, to play, or just going out the doorway, he looks for an order from your pack leader. So here’s an excellent way to train your dog which is rewarding and fun. At exactly the same time, you might be giving your dog the impression that you’re the pack leader:
Ask your pet to “Sit” while you hold the food bowl out of reach out of your dog, about 2 feet away. Stand sideways with one shoulder.
Begin to reduce the bowl straight to the ground. As you lower the bowl, if your pet moves or gets up, just say very matter-of-factly “Nope” (your command word) AND at the exact same time move the bowl away and out of reach. Then ask your dog to sit down again. (You may have to step from location so you can face your pet sidewise or put him back into position if he has scooted forward). The key is always to start fresh from the same position again.
When the SIT POSTURE is maintained by your pet, begin lowering the bowl to the floor–while he’s still in place. Pull the bowl, in case your dog begins to get up to come to the bowl. The key is that you’re bending down with all the bowl and pulling back with all the bowl before you are able to place it to a floor while your puppy is HOLDING THE SIT POSTURE.
Make eye contact with your dog while he’s in the sit position. You need your dog to remain in the sit position AND make eye contact, before you transfer the bowl to your puppy and give him it.
When you have put the bowl on a floor, say “Stay” (or your command word), wait several seconds, then move the bowl towards your dog and allow him to eat. Do not expect dog classes ware too much from your dog, yet. Just a few seconds of HOLDING THE STAY SPOT “wait” time is good initially.
When your pet has maintained the SIT & STAY to get some seconds, then transfer the bowl toward your pet and allow him to eat his food. You are developing your pet ‘s behavior to be able to get the benefit to sit and wait for your command.
Recall both you along with your dog needs to understand the rules: to be able to get food your puppy must hold the Sit & Stay position and look at you (not the food) to win the match!
You can attempt this with a ball, a treat or toy also.
The Sit & Stay Game is not just about training your puppy to sit and stay for food. It is the happiness you get when your dog politely sits and stays for you –and concerning the compliments you give. What it’s actually about is winning a fun and rewarding relationship for both you and also your dog!
